Forget typical paint and paper; Brazilian artist Vik Muniz uses supplies like ketchup, dust, toys, chocolate and puzzle pieces to create his works.
Muniz’s projects are recreations of classic artworks by great masters throughout history. But instead of using paint to render copies, he uses these unconventional materials to literally reconstruct images. The results are twisting, mosaic-like surfaces of random objects pieced together. Still, they boast a sense of cohesiveness – despite their varied origins – while playing with illusions.
‘When looking at his work, the spectator finds himself sucked into an oscillation between what he sees and what he perceives – in other words, between the material and the iconography,’ says the galerie xippas, where Muniz’s Picutres of Magazine 2 is currently showing.
The exhibition, which focuses on the destruction of media, features nine works and can be visited until 28 July.
