This intervention inserts a densely packed series of coinciding events into a compact space for a hairdressing salon. Cabinetry in constant states of transformation allow a changing spatial definition determined by the activities within.
Six mobile mirrored workstations allow for spaces to be folded and unfolded, to variously function as: a stage for teaching; stations to work collaboratively or individually, with single or multiple viewpoints; gallery and demonstration venue.
Relocating from a premises three times as large, compression is a recurring issue in the project. A strategy for flexible, adaptable spaces to contain overlapping functions, and a condensed, novel juxtaposition of program, became the means to occupy this small space. The project is almost entirely cabinetry, as a means to achieve the tight budget and short construction timeframe.
Cabinetry is hung from the ceiling, maximising opportunities for storage without obstruction. Keeping cabinetry mobile and off the floor addressed the practicalities and intensive pace of a hairdressing salon.
The ceiling cabinetry is employed to delineate the space, implying edges to zones and programs. It undulates to create raised vaults demarcating zones for traffic and circulation, the erosion implied by paths of desire. It steps down to be a central focus in the space, creating zones of compression and expansion, resolving in a cluster of workstations in the middle of the space, encircled by revolving activities.
