Zhihé Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

Located in Fengshan District, Kaohsiung, Zhihé Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic breaks away from conventional impressions, blending old and new design elements to reflect the profound heritage of Chinese medicine. The young physician, an expert in traditional medicine and an enthusiast of antique Chinese furniture, envisioned a medical space that embodies both cultural depth and contemporary aesthetics.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by an arched wooden ceiling extending throughout the space, creating a grand yet harmonious ambiance reminiscent of traditional Chinese architecture. The ceiling’s flowing lines seamlessly integrate with the walls, subtly defining different functional zones, including the waiting area, consultation rooms, and electrotherapy section.

The waiting area features a long bench with an embedded Chinese chessboard, allowing patients to experience traditional culture while waiting. The chessboard blends seamlessly with the bench, maintaining a sleek design, and can be lifted to reveal a hidden compartment for chess piece storage—an ingenious touch of functionality.

The reception wall doubles as a Chinese herbal display, with neatly arranged glass jars resembling a meticulously organized chemistry lab. This exhibit showcases the physician’s dedication to herbal medicine and deep respect for traditional healing practices.

The electrotherapy section draws inspiration from ancient wisdom, using geometric patchwork designs with different fabrics and textures. This not only echoes the traditional value of resourcefulness but also adds an artistic touch to the space. The treatment chairs are carefully designed with adjustable heights to accommodate both patients and medical staff, featuring built-in equipment storage and a lower drawer for foot support, enhancing comfort during treatment.

This clinic’s design is more than just an aesthetic statement—it is a testament to the physician’s passion for and commitment to Chinese medicine. Here, tradition and modernity converge, creating a space where medical expertise and design harmonize to offer a holistic healing experience for both body and mind.
