Client
Temporary Yabakei
Floor area
1320 ㎡
Completion
2021

A limited-time hotel using a tunnel just prior to its opening as the site. A structural frame made of Japanese cedar grown in the suburbs of Yabakei, the site of the hotel, and a table over 30 meters long made of a 200-year-old oak tree that used to grow in a local temple were used to create a temporary space with the theme of local production for local consumption.

Visitors will enjoy meals and drinks prepared by traveling chefs and bartenders using local ingredients, experience music amidst the unique echoes of the tunnel, and at midnight look up at the starry sky in the mountains with nothing but the tunnel around. Stay overnight in a camper and enjoy bread, honey, and coffee made with organic, local ingredients in the morning. The event was held on a road that is normally inaccessible before the opening of the tunnel, an event that can never be reproduced again.

The structure created for this event was designed to be disassembled, relocated, and reused as the structural framework for a new lodging facility that will allow visitors to experience Yabakei from a different angle during the firefly and autumn foliage seasons. We hope that the many people participating in this project, which is based on the themes of local production for local consumption, sustainability, and regional revitalization, will be able to experience the various charms of Yabakei in different locations and in different seasons.
