When we visited the site for the first time, conditions looked unfavorable for a store, as the frontage is narrow and had a lot of depth behind it. However, imagining a place that makes you feel like “I want to go inside”, led us to think of a space that has depth going backwards like a tunnel. The main construction is of solid panels of Tenryu cedar that are placed at intervals of 525mm and connected laterally with shelf boards. The natural grains are only left showing at the edges and vertical materials are stained lighter and horizontal materials (shelf boards) are stained darker. This was to emphasize the shadows of the tunnel space making it appear different to the color of the wooden study desks. You enter the store from the front, zigzag sideways once and enter the tunnel from the side. The structure was made so that you cannot enter into the tunnel directly from the front, but you can see through it from both inside and outside. In childhood, your study desk was your own small space where you felt you belonged. We hope that for children and families who visit, the memory of this tunnel space will become part of that indelible scene.
