Located in the German city’s Sendling district, the 360-room WunderLocke hotel is situated in a former Siemens office building. Holloway Li worked to expose the structure’s ‘bare bones’, drawing upon the area’s industrial heritage while dressing the space in a way inherent to the Locke brand. In doing so, the designers took inspiration from 20th-century artist Wassily Kandinsky, who complemented linear geometries with vibrant colour and abstract forms. WunderLocke’s common areas – including co-working and event spaces, a creative hub, workout studio and sauna – take functional inspiration from these forms. They are constructed to encourage flexible use and are easily adapted for new needs as to avoid wasteful renovation. Aside from the original architecture, existing features to remain include a 1960s terrazzo staircase; stainless-steel details and a handrail updates its look. Holloway Li balanced the heaviness of the concrete building with generous greenery, botanical colourways and natural materials like timber and raffia. The furniture stems from a collaboration with German furniture design studio Co-ordination, who developed a bespoke version of its Thread collection. Seeking energy-responsible lighting, the designers found a partner in Dodds & Shute, who specified fixtures that ensure the offset of 15 tonnes of CO2 and protected 979 trees from deforestation. WunderLocke’s hospitality offer and the accompanying spatial design support the farm-to-table movement. Comprising a restaurant, fine-dining Chef’s Table, coffee shop, wine and cocktail bar spread over seven floors, the F&B programme is called Mural Farmhouse, facilitated by the owners of local Michelin-starred restaurant Mural.
