Wowow House Pre-K School is a local daycare institution which specializes in providing quality and affordable child care to the surrounding neighborhood. This is an interior architecture project where a two-story, unoccupied community space is transformed into a pre-k care center in Huai’an, China. In the design of the project, we prioritized the physical and psychological needs of children, and integrated it closely with the daily activity schedule developed by the school’s nursery professionals.
The school is composed of a gathering lobby, a health service room, a sensory integration training space, four classrooms for 1-3 years old, one baby care room, one kitchen, and play/exercise areas featuring built-in climbing walls and slides. All the classrooms are organized along the facade to ensure there’s abundant natural daylight in the space where children spend the most time at. In the corridor between the classrooms, play and exercise areas are being built to be part of the space, with the hope to encourage the healthy body growth of children at this age. Facing the corridor, the kitchen space is enclosed with large area of glazing, where the process of food preparation is open to the eyes of the public.
The buildings are designed with the goal to minimize energy consumption by maximizing the use of daylighting, natural ventilation, and localized split air conditioning system allowing for local control of temperature. The color scheme of the school consists of simple, natural color and material. The space overall is meant to become a container for children’s imagination and to be filled with colorful objects and toys. The construction of the interior project involves using mostly eco-friendly, prefabricated material, aiming to generate as little VOCs as possible.
