WithMe’s first inline store is a two-story 650 sqm retail space on an iconic corner of the Santa Monica Place shopping center. The web of narratives for this project concerns an attempt to bridge the divide between virtual online and physical spaces and to make personalized activities in each more present in the other from an experiential and ethical point of view. WithMe's objective was conveyed to us with the following statement: "Change the file, not the fixtures." Programmatically, like an algorithm, different brands with different objectives should be able to inhabit the space and customize the fixtures, store graphics, and the database of product information via software. The organization of the space on two levels allows the store to operate as a single or multi-brand store. The custom wood and LED ceiling elements screen the raw ceiling and complement insufficient track lighting restricted by energy codes. These elements allow different brands or zones to be highlighted in static or constantly changing color compositions. The robotic Shapeshifter wall near the main entry on L1 can react to visitor movement and transform to offer different display and visual branding opportunities. The low-tech "bone walls" complement high-tech fixtures by offering a simple and adaptable display framework.
