Innovation
Revealing the transformation of a circus building into a vibrant tech hub, OYO aims to foster creativity and collaboration between the tech scene and the city of Ghent. The hub encompasses The Arena, where technology and culture converge into a wide a range of events, from live coding installations to theatre acts. Encircling the Arena, the Startup Campus serves as an ecosystem hosting over 35 early-stage tech start-ups. We involved partners at the forefront of technological innovation, such as AUAR (Automated Architecture), with whom we built modular meeting rooms and walls as wooden “boxes” using robotics.
Creativity
Our approach was no-nonsense, focusing on simplicity and functionality. The biggest challenge was working within the structure to address accessibility, acoustics and technical requirements; demanding great flexibility and close collaboration among designers and contractors. Leading this tailored process with a true team effort was key to translate Wintercircus’ vision into reality by reusing materials, upgrading furniture, adapting our design etc. For instance, we reused old library shelves of a public library to give them new life. We retrieved old car lamps from a garage, which were cleaned and refitted to add as a quirky detail. Additionally, we sourced second-hand furniture with the help of partners like Scrap vzw, Rotor and The Good Stuff Factory. Through this approach, our “eclectic” design represents a fusion of contemporary elements and traditional elements with a nod to the building’s past functions as a circus and a garage.
Functionality
Each space within Wintercircus already had its own character. Rather than imposing a uniform style, we ensured that each space effectively fulfils the function for which it is intended. The Startup campus requires quick and efficient meeting areas, small spaces for 3 to 4 people and easy access to phone booths. An open-plan office was essential to foster collaboration, while other spaces, such as the former horse stables, provided space for focus zones. For other areas, whether for research, hospitality or performances, the design responds to the flexible needs of the programme and creates a seamless blend between functionality and atmosphere. The creative flow that originates from the hub also resonates and reconnects outside of the building’s walls, becoming an integral part of the urban life of Ghent.
Eco-Social Impact
As an economic and social catalyst for the city, Wintercircus provides space to welcome diverse groups and to encourage curiosity and entrepreneurship. The magic is the opportunity for innovation, inspired by spontaneous interactions and cross-pollination between entrepreneurs, researchers, students, digital creatives and the general public. It also offers the opportunity to reveal the many layers of history and strengthen the city's circular economy. Ultimately, the design aims to extend the life of the building to ensure a sustainable future for the campus
