The objective of this exposition was to showcase the natural and symbolic wealth of the Chilean sea and its whales, their presence in the artistic imaginarium and their scientific and ecological relevance. The narration was structured around the whale as an iconic conservation species and was organized in 4 main themes that were distributed in two rooms. 200 pieces were exhibited, representing different views. Art, history, science and ecology were staged to recreate the sea’s imaginarium.
Both rooms had an immersive atmosphere. The deep blue of the walls, in an ongoing dialogue with a subtle light that was carefully directed to the pieces, blended the physical limits of the space without having to explicitly reconstruct the seabed, thus evoking the enormity of the ocean.
The first room achieved the role of providing context and linking the visitors to the development of science around the sea. The sound of the singing of different whales and the projection of the frequency they emit were the protagonists. The second room appealed to contemplation, introspection and to raising awareness. A layer of PET bottles collected from the Chilean coastline floats in the air, contrasting the ocean’s contamination with a projection of a whale in its natural state. The sound and image complemented the experience of feeling submerged in a sea of plastic, sensitizing the visitors about the need to responsibly care for our marine ecosystems.
