The flagship store of Waterfront, an umbrella brand that boasts the largest market share in Japan. In addition to selling umbrellas, the client wanted to create a flexible space where they could hold exhibitions and events related to their products, which would have the function of expressing and promoting the company. Therefore, we proposed to design the space based on the concept of "folding and unfolding" and make all furniture foldable like umbrellas. When the shop opens, about 2,000 umbrellas of various colors are displayed on the shelves that appears when the furniture is unfolded. Not only the shelves but all furniture such as cash registers, clerks' work desks and benches for customers can also be folded. The furniture looks like columns of the building when folded. Hence the shop becomes a space suitable for events and exhibitions by folding the furniture. The layout of the furniture was decided according to the position of three existing columns. The furniture is designed to look like a larger version of an existing column. We duplicated it and lined them up evenly in the space. We considered the columns not just as structures to support the architecture, but as one of the objects to compose the space.
