Located in the rapidly evolving Green Square precinct, to the south of Sydney’s CBD, this Early Learning Centre project involved the adaptive reuse of a heritage-listed outpatients building into a 74 place early learning space. Fox Johnston designed both architecture and interiors.
A complex and prescriptive brief for a sensitive client meant this was a particularly challenging project. Careful attention was paid throughout to the function, useability and specific user requirements of very young children and their carers, resulting in a cohesive and robust design that bridges old and new. The centre has been thoughtfully designed to surprise and delight both its small clients and their carers as well as offer the opportunity to understand the history of the site and its evolution.
The result is an early learning centre unlike any other – every single detail has been carefully considered and thoughtfully designed to make sure it works architecturally and meets the needs of its small clients.
The integrity of the existing building has been retained - breathing new life into the structure – and a contemporary wing housing the entry, playspace and wraparound verandah has been grafted onto the original shell.
