Don Son was born at an event, the Wiesbaden Biennale culture festival, with its unconventional art installations, theater performances and musical presentations. Don Son spent a few wonderful days there as a guest until all that was left of him/her was a heap of boards. Don Son is a pop-up bar from wabi-sabi that was developed specially for the Wiesbaden Biennale. The process of its creation involved no pre-planning and the use of just rough boards, paper, and paint. Light installations and selected music made for a fitting atmosphere. The overall impression appears improvised, makeshift, and imperfect. This impression is also created by the bar area of Don Son, which is merely the sundeck of an empty shopping center with a multi-story car park: a grimy, somewhat dilapidated setting that is far from an obvious choice for a bar with a lounge area. Yet it is precisely this place that immediately felt fitting for the philosophy of our drinks brand wabi-sabi. After all, in line with the Japanese concept of the same name, we celebrate purist beauty, imperfection, and the aesthetic disruption that is more poetic than any perfect façade. We therefore wanted to leave the location in its pure state, adding only small, poetic accents. We sprayed the walls with our name and painted the rails and elevator doors metallic gold. Simple, unadorned plastic loungers and white umbrellas, which invite guests to scribble and put stickers on them, create a very particular style of lounge.
