The apartment project encompassed an area of 52 m², featuring three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom, the primary aim of this renovation project was to reconstruct the partition of the apartment, which has constrained ceiling heights and a conventional Hong Kong floor plan reminiscent of the 1980s.
In this project, the initial focus was reconfiguring the floorplan to optimize space utilization. The original layout underwent significant changes, including relocating the kitchen to the former dining area and repurposing the previous kitchen space into a storage room. Moreover, the guest room and previous corridor were refurnished into a more expansive dining area. To enhance aesthetics and functionality, bespoke curved wooden ceilings were installed to conceal the structural elements, such as the beams and girders. These strategic adjustments were implemented to ensure the efficient utilization of every square inch of space for the family.
After the layout rearrangement, our team aimed to enhance the design by adding innovative elements. Instead of the stereotypical colour of ordinary kitchens and bathrooms with subtle neutrals or pale-shaded white and grey, two vibrant colours were chosen to create an extraordinary impression. For the kitchen, we implemented different tones of maroon to create a modern sensation. In addition, the kitchen and living room are only separated by a massive glass window, exhibiting a strong visual contrast with a two-tone design as the living and dining rooms are white-and-grey themed. For the bathroom, instead of using the conventional colour pattern, we applied an apricot, orange-coloured tone throughout the area to produce a relaxing, yet distinctive atmosphere. The bold choice of using innovative colours confers this apartment with modern essence.
Lastly, we focused on enhancing the spatial planning circulation to optimize the functionality and overall user experience within the apartment. To accomplish that, we started with the newly established foyer area. The foyer area was re-designed with silver wallpaper on the ceiling and a white micro-cement on the wall for better light reflection and to create a separation between the living room and the main entrance. Adjacent to the foyer, a new storage room has been built, offering extra space for the clients near the main door. Then, the kitchen, a pivotal element in spatial circulation, was intentionally designed with a U-shaped tabletop. This ensures optimal functionality and storage efficiency from top to bottom. Furthermore, a three-point traffic flow strategy was implemented to facilitate user-friendly access to cooking, washing, and the cabinets within the kitchen. With the transformed dining and living areas, the spatial circulation of the apartment was greatly enhanced.
