The Swiss eyewear label VIU is expanding to Scandinavia and officially opened its doors on June 15 at Copenhagen‘s Pilestraede 35. The two-story retail space is a modern mixture of cork varieties, grey timber composite and contrasting metal elements in blue. The entire VIU collection of prescription eyewear and sunglasses is displayed on around 150 m2. The Copenhagen VIU flagship store was – like all its own stores – designed by VIU creative director Fabrice Aeberhard and reflects the label’s design philosophy with its clear lines and distinct simplicity. Inspiration for the interior was provided by Danish values such as closeness to nature and ecological thinking, which are expressed through the use of natural and sustainable materials. Thus, the concept of a monochrome space is complemented by a wall display system made from cork, in order to display the eyewear. The natural material is obtained from the cork oak, which does not have to be felled for the peeling of the bark and regenerates comparatively quickly – a 100% renewable and recyclable raw material. The first floor of the store (45 m2), which can be reached by a long white staircase, will for the time being function as a curated space. For the opening an exhibition was staged which unites six Scandinavian artists under the subject of «craftsmanship».
