The relationship between the nine generations of relatives is not only a continuation of bloodline, but also a kinship with blood thicker than water. In a family, every member should recognize their ages hierarchy, as well as their responsibilities and obligations, therefore keeping the family harmonious.
Since the beginning of the Republic of China, the demand for four generations living together has completely weakened as time goes by. Living alone or together with only two generations has clearly become the mainstream way of life for young people nowadays.
Tradition is gradually disappearing, will the ages hierarchy and the continuity of family lineage also gradually disappear?
We don't want to shout anything. We just question that some of the good traditions that we have inherited for so many years really is disappearing, just like the dialects has gradually become scarce language since the Z era. Instead, English and Mandarin is spoken all over the world.
This project is located in Deqing, Huzhou. It is a 900 square meters south-facing villa surrounded by gardens and landscapes. You can see the mountain outlines of Mogan Mountain and Chengshan Mountain over the roof of the building, and the sunset shines golden on the house in the clear days.
Its architectural style is modern, with most of the building's façade is stone cladding, and some of the overhanging space is made of antiseptic wood. The facade was somewhat old and damaged since this building had fallen in to disrepair, so we partially renovated and repaired it.
The family members are mainly three generations living together, with occasional four generations living together. They hope their home should be generous and decent, clean and tidy, while having a sense of value and warming. It can not only meet the living requirement of each family member, but also hosts a group of guests with open arms. The hospitable owner is from Anji, enjoying gathering with family and friends at home. So the scale of the space is a key concern for them.
At the same time, we also take into account the personality and privacy needs of every family member. The relationship between people and space is our core design consideration for residential spaces. This project is considered as actually a joint design work done by the owner and us.
