Veja’s Madrid outpost is a modern space inspired by sustainable practices. From the outside, the shop looks traditional – one you would expect to find in Justicia, a neighbourhood filled with traditional Spanish architecture – but inside, contemporary and traditional styles coalesce. The framework of the building has been kept intact with exposed walls and beams, but a minimalistic aesthetic and the use of clean lines establishes the modernity of the space. The display furniture includes unadorned folded steel display shelves and a concrete merchandising structure formed from an old board mould. A seemingly untouched exposed brick wall forms the framework for the building. With a stature of 4-m wide by 4-m high, it encompasses the space. The dividing walls are painted with plaster, hinting at traditional Spanish style while echoing the standard colour of Veja shoes. Plantea Estudio and Veja’s commitment to sustainability has a presence throughout the store: there’s a repair bar for shoes, vintage functional furniture and it is powered by renewable energy. The designers incorporated a mixture of modern and vintage furniture, like Joaquim Belsa Aldea chairs crafted from wood and braided bulrush, repurposed stools and neon art by Brazilian artist Kleber Matheus. The space echoes a traditional Spanish courtyard with big windows, brickwork and plaster walls. These elements work together to create an inviting space, enhancing the qualities of the existing industrial atmosphere.
