As times change and urban landscapes evolve, DAS Omori Design adapts to local conditions, deeply exploring the Hakka native culture, community experience, and living spaces. We continually unearth the "local identity" of users, finding a contemporary expression for Hakka culture that resonates with the present. In the restoration process, we adhere to the principle of "repairing the old as old," preserving the original structure and shape of ancient buildings while integrating new elements and materials to create a fusion of traditional and modern spaces.

Our design begins with contemporary reflections on Hakka architecture. Utilizing reconfigured "bricks" as a material and enlarging the form, the front café space features "light bricks" occupying the space in a low-scale arrangement. In the book bar area, new materials interact with the edges of light fixtures to form a "brick" boundary, creating a high-scale dimension. This responds directly to the site's ambiance. Through form, material, color, and detail, we exhibit the coexistence of old and new, similar and different. Warm wood tones imbue the space with a sense of time, maintaining a gentle overall style. From the façade to the ceiling, the herringbone structure extends, with ceiling wood panels orderly laid to overlap, forming light brick shapes, echoing the wall-to-wall bookshelves and allowing for an infinite extension of cultural implications.

Visitors to this space shed their burdens and view the Hakka architecture before them with a calm, reverent heart, allowing folk culture to settle here. The combination of high ceilings and wall-to-wall bookshelves, along with the soft padding of the booths, softens the robustness of the rammed earth walls. The enveloping space offers a sense of security to the guests, enhancing the reading experience. Here, we return to the here and now, to an idealized life, to everyday scenes, collectively pondering the future direction of the community.
