Unity has emerged as the world’s most widely used real-time 3D development platform. In Copenhagen, where Unity was founded in 2004, the company renovated a three-story building in the heart of the city center. Honoring the original structure’s history, we incorporated modern yet warm design features through the lens of Scandinavian aesthetic sensibilities. Committing to sustainability and staying true to Nordic design, we selected local lighting and furniture, reducing our ecological footprint. At the same time, we incorporated unexpected elements: a cantilevered reception desk balances precariously upon entry, wood-slat cladding runs askew of vertical, and contorted window portals frame rooflines and bring the top floor to life. The alterations complement the existing building’s character. Ultimately, we designed a clean, minimal space and made key interventions with raw, bold, dramatic elements — all while maintaining historic vaulted ceilings, augmenting window openings, and dusting off a few original gems. As with any historical renovation, exercising restraint was key. We wanted to honor the building’s long life by letting it shine while making notable modern interventions. Striking a balance between vintage and contemporary was a central challenge of the project. Unity’s platform is used to create alternate environments — and if employees are going to be inspired to construct virtual realities, their workspace must be rich in interesting detail. We incorporated a variety of materials, textures, colors, and lighting effects to craft an inspiring place to create. Immersive and experiential, it plays with perspective and point of view while bending reality and forming optical illusions — reminding staff to always search for the unexpected.
