The Uh May Residence is a meditative space for the creative process. Using the natural surrounding environment as a main source of inspiration, the organic construction eschews right angles and straight lines in favor of a cohesive language of flowing curves. These were achieved without the traditional use of floorplans and drawings, instead employing a sculptural improvisation in response to the intrinsic specificities of the site, arising from the collaboration between the architects and the construction team.
During the construction process, rather than cut down the trees on site, the team built apertures into the floors, walls, and ceilings to accommodate their continuing growth. The alternating exterior and interior spaces integrate natural elements of light and air into the home; the living room, bedrooms, performance space, and kitchen are connected through outdoor walkways that pass over reflecting pools and an artificial lake.
The interior incorporates custom concrete tables and seating of the same organic language. The textures combine the smoothness of polished concrete and the roughness of bejuco vines, which are embedded throughout the space, and details including the lighting fixtures and woven accents have been custom-made through the traditional artisanal methods of the local indigenous communities.
