Uchiko’s Houston location brings a fresh introduction to the concept. Bold design moves work with layered materiality to create an inviting and cozy dining experience. Inspired by the central hearth of Japanese farmhouses, Uchiko presents a smokey intimacy, which feels old and new at the same time. Quality and artistry are introduced with natural, worn materials that are hand-crafted. A strong timber-latticed entry moment creates warmth and procession. The rough material is manipulated in a refined manner to create an unexpected arrival experience.

The use of natural, worn materials, hand-crafted with quality and artistry, adds to the restaurant's inviting and cozy ambiance. Custom-designed, eroded cast concrete light shades by sculptor Brandon Mike welcome guests at the front entry and carry dappled light through the two main dining areas. Wall coverings created from original works by artist Camille Warmington bring color to the space with rich shades of blue. The custom banquettes inspired by the work of Brazilian modernist Jose Zanine Caldas and the blue fringe light fixture at the chef's table further contribute to the restaurant's unique and creative identity.

The space is welcoming and approachable while maintaining a high caliber of design consistent with the Uchi family of restaurants. A long sushi bar and linear light fixture offer a backdrop for the performance of sushi creation in the back dining space. The dining room is punctuated with a large private dining area as well as a chef’s table featuring a large, blue fringe light fixture. The front dining area is anchored by a lush patio and bar that embrace the activity of Houston’s lively Post Oak neighborhood while still offering an intimate setting for diners. The layout also includes a mezzanine that offers private dining space with a bar and sushi bar, providing both intimacy and a view into the restaurant.

A blend of sophistication and environmental responsibility is achieved through the thoughtful selection of materials, with reclaimed walnut flooring serving as a prime example. This sustainable choice showcases a timeless aesthetic and gives a grounding and inviting warmth to the customer’s dining experience. The larger development this restaurant is a part of has achieved LEED Silver certification.
