Tokushima University, one of the leading national educational institutions in Shikoku Island, emphasizes the importance of sharing information about projects and events between staff members. The renovation project was intended to create a flexible space to encourage communication. The pre-existing floor plan of the university was an isolating layout. Once exiting the elevator, the hallway, the secretary’s office, the waiting room and the meeting room were all separated from each other. Thus, the space was not optimized for casual meetings. To start, all partitions were removed to create an open space that could see as soon as exiting the elevator. Removing the partitions and creating an open layout eliminated the divided rooms and increased the opportunity for people to communicate with each other. The cafe counter and multi-row bench seats are suitable for holding events for large numbers of guests, while the layout of the desks are interchangeable for business meetings. The renovated space can be separated from the entry by closing a glass door. The various additions to doors and furniture support a variety uses. Materials from Tokushima prefecture were predominantly used for the renovation. The tables, shelves and walls are made of cedar wood from the Tokushima prefecture, as the local government has focused on funding the production of cedar in recent years. The furniture pieces were also made by local craftsmen known as “Tokushima's crafts master”. The cedar board used for the wall was painted using a special indigo dye produced in Tokushima. The indigo gradation on cedar gives the space a drastic visual impact. The chairs and bench cushions are also indigo dyed textiles. The renovation project relied on various resources from Tokushima to create an unique regional environment.
