TOJIRO Knife Gallery Osaka – A Fusion of Tradition and Industry
Designed by KATATA YOSHIHITO DESIGN, TOJIRO Knife Gallery Osaka is a space where customers can experience Tojiro’s high-quality knives and craftsmanship. The project merges traditional Japanese design with industrial aesthetics, harmonizing the maintenance room and knife gallery.
Concept and Design
This space was created to showcase Tojiro’s integrated knife production process and the craftsmanship behind each blade.
The store consists of two main areas: the maintenance room and the knife gallery.
Maintenance Room: Bringing the Factory Experience to the Store
The maintenance room allows customers to observe the knife sharpening and repair process directly from outside, offering a factory-like experience. It is equipped with the same machines and materials used in Tojiro’s main factory in Tsubame City. This space embodies Japan’s "culture of cherishing belongings," promoting sustainability by extending knife lifespan, reducing waste, and encouraging responsible consumption. It also serves as a consultation hub where customers can receive expert guidance on knife care.
Knife Gallery: Showcasing Japanese Craftsmanship
The knife gallery reflects the refined aesthetics of a Japanese knife manufacturer, using wood to create a warm yet sophisticated atmosphere. Knives are displayed in a layout inspired by the relationship between knives and cutting boards, visually emphasizing their role in Japanese cuisine. The linear design highlights Tojiro’s precision and quality.
A key feature is the "Yoroi-bari" technique, a traditional Japanese architectural method applied to knife displays. Additionally, knives are secured with a special magnetic system using ultra-thin veneer processing, recreating the texture of a cutting board. This allows the knives to appear as if they are floating while remaining securely fixed, enhancing both functionality and visual appeal.
Blending Tradition with Industrial Aesthetics
The store’s facade features spangle material with galvanized coating, evoking the industrial essence of a factory. The seamless integration of the Yoroi-bari elements from the knife gallery and the industrial features of the maintenance room creates a harmonious fusion of tradition and modern materials.
A New Perspective on Spatial Design
This fusion of Japanese and industrial aesthetics represents a new approach to spatial design, deeply rooted in Japan’s spirit of coexistence.
We believe this project serves as an inspiration for designing spaces that blend diverse cultural influences, a necessity that will continue to grow in importance across Asia and beyond.
