dpa worked in collaboration with the Client, the New-York Historical Society and Eva Jiricna Architects to create the Tiffany Gallery for the Client. The brief required the creation of a spectacular, custom-designed glass gallery showcasing the preeminent collection of Tiffany lamps featuring a contemporary glass staircase, which was to provide an iconic sculptural object in its own right. The project was inspired by New-York Historical’s discovery in 2005 of the hidden history of Clara Driscoll and her Women’s Glass Cutting Department, who designed and created iconic Tiffany lampshades at the turn of the 20th Century, many of which are in the Museum’s collection. The exhibition celebrates Driscoll and her team of “Tiffany Girls,” who worked in anonymity and remained hidden in Louis C. Tiffany’s shadow until the discovery of Driscoll’s correspondence. The Gallery is about light, glass and the story of the Tiffany Girls. The concept was for the stair to float in the space using a cool white light, contrasting with the highly decorative and colourful Tiffany shades. The challenge was to illuminate each Tiffany Lamp respecting its colours and ensuring its presence in the Gallery was strong, whilst balancing this with the feature stair and Gallery envelope, to visually stimulate visitors, which has been achieved.
