Theano Hair Salon, a unique space nestled in the heart of Athens, opens a door to the ambiance of old Athenian courtyards, blending the old and the new in an exciting way. Space was created by completely renovating an old building from the 1960s, in central Athens, close to the Kallimarmaro Stadium that hosted the first modern Olympic Games. The neighborhood of Pangrati which is home to the hair salon, forms a special blend of modern and old, with roads named after ancient Greek figures and home to museums and vibrant nightlife. The design process for the space and collaboration between designer and client took a year and a half, with many discussions on the philosophy of the space and goals to achieve a unique and special space. Ultimately, the philosophy rising from this creative process has as its goal to focus on how clients experience the space when they enter, enhancing human communication and joy, through positive thinking and a relaxed attitude. This is reflected in the style of the space which has become a calm and serene haven from the bustle of city life. The space becomes a meeting point of opposites that ultimately create a complete whole: warm and comforting wood versus cool and solid marble, both materials found extensively in Greek architecture. The effect is reminiscent of an old Athenian backyard, aiming to offer a sense of homecoming and relaxation to guests. The centerpiece of the space is a large table, with the focal point being an olive tree growing right in the middle of the space. The olive tree is a timeless symbol of Greece, and Athens in particular, representing culture, knowledge, and wisdom. This natural element is tied to innovation, as to ensure the tree’s well-being in an indoor space, a special ventilation system was designed in order to deliver optimal conditions. The space is tied together with the creative use of custom printing, used in the fabrics for the chairs, sofa, and curtains, which blend seamlessly with the wall design. The printed flowers add warmth and interest to the more subdued hues surrounding the space. In the case of the sofa especially, an exciting pattern was used, making it almost invisible, blending in the background, and opening up the space even more. The original floor of the space is preserved, a mosaic design dating from 1964, a style that is found in many old Athenian homes. It was discovered while the renovation process was going on and the designer and the client decided to keep it, adding to the space’s sustainability by reclaiming this old material. All these elements come together to create a beautiful space, which welcomes clients and offers them a unique experience of beauty and well-being. The central table adds to this, as it is a big difference in how hair salons are usually designed. In this instance, clients sit around the big table, removing the feeling of isolation and coming together in a sense of community that is harmonious with Greek values.
