The WPP Chicago Campus design emphasizes a studio-like environment, with an architectural language that speaks to the culture of WPP and the surrounding Fulton Market District in Chicago—a former industrial neighborhood now home to numerous Fortune 500 companies. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer views onto the historic district. Material elements such as decorative iron grid boxes and staggered edges defined with the flooring draw upon the site’s industrial heritage and reinforce the physical convergence of these collocated Operating Companies. Designed as a unique model for the office of the future, the WPP Chicago Campus is a workplace that was designed to morph into an engagement center, and energizing hub of the workforce, while emphasizing choice, spatial diversity, and flexibility. In the ever-changing world of advertising and media, this consolidation allows the organization to be more agile and deliver a more integrated offer to its clients. Bringing the many agencies under one roof allows people to do their most creative work. As agencies’ needs change over time, the shared space is easily modified without adjusting lease terms. Well before WPP’s workforce went remote, the rise of mobile knowledge workers and technological advances impacted how and where people worked. The WPP Chicago Campus was designed with this in mind. Spread across seven floors, WPP’s activity-based workplace emphasizes choice and autonomy. Employees can select where and how they prefer to work based on the task at hand. Three seating types—work benches, team tables and individual workspaces—accommodate solo work, collaborative projects, group learning and socializing. Each of the three work types offer sophisticated technology, including 32-inch curved monitors. Elsewhere in the space, punched and textured metal walls, rich fabrics, industrial lighting and colorful graphics designed by HOK’s Experience Design team communicate the DNA of WPP and its multifaceted agencies. A feature stair, a hallmark of WPP offices, provides connectivity across floors and links staff to a shared amenities floor with a lounge, a 180-degree terrace, presentation rooms, a production space with photo and sound recording studios, a wellness center, lockers and a café. The “Lantern Stair” acts as a beacon in the West Loop with its dynamic light fixture that extends to all seven floors. A key factor throughout the design process included achieving sustainability goals. Through material and fixture selections, a diligent construction process and energy modeling, the project is currently pending LEED Gold certification.
