Looking ahead to the workplace of the future for Salone del Mobile 2017, curator Cristiana Cutrona chose “A Joyful Sense at Work” as the theme and invited four design firms from four different parts of the world to envision a joyful workplace decades from now. Studio O+A’s vision centered on maximum flexibility, technological utility and freedom of movement—in short, the freedom to work anywhere, however you please. O+A’s installation “The Water Cooler” presented an environment with the shape-shifting fluidity of water, a space as bare as a stage, but also as adaptable. Virtual reality was a key component of this visionary workplace—the ability to pull from the cloud not just information, but room configurations and technology that currently exists only as hardware. Working with Microsoft Hololens, O+A created a minimalist space to contain all spaces where one day virtual printers and monitors will be summoned as needed. Augmented by prosthetic work vests that turned each wearer into a mobile workstation, this “bare stage” office included meditative rooms in recognition of an enlightened culture, surely on its way, that will venerate leisure as an essential element of work. Artist Fernanda D’Agostino’s “Generativity Pool” set the mood by opening a circle of light in the floor around which joyful workers of the future will gather to think, talk and dream.
