"The Magic of Cuir Bouilli" designed by Amsterdam studio, The Invisible Party, showing at shoe and leather industry museum, Schoenenkwartier is a captivating showcase offering a glimpse through time. Introducing audiences to the ancient french craft of cuir bouilli or “boiled leather”. This centuries-old discipline magically transforms soft, malleable leather into unrecognisably dark, rigid and waterproof material through a technique much of which remains a mystery to this day. This spacial design enhances the mystery and mastery on display and invites guests to explore "The Magic of Cuir Bouilli”.
Innovation: The undulating composition meshes artifacts from throughout the ages and rejects a traditional chronological curation. Instead the exhibition is presented harmoniously across three categories: craft, design and fashion. This presentation style and the removal of detailed information next to the objects was a conscious choice to enhance the experience of the gallery goers, minimizing the over intellectualisation and instead inviting them to get lost amongst the craft and be inspired by the forms, materials and colors on display.
Functionality: The design prioritizes functionality by creating a layout that encourages exploration and engagement. The composition of plinths and platforms allows visitors to navigate seamlessly through the space, while the removal of detailed information next to the objects minimizes cognitive overload and invites guests to focus on the craftsmanship and design elements on display. Down one length of the exhibit a unique timeline has been created in the form of 55 prints each reflecting a cuir bouilli piece on display with a bold graphic illustration and information pertaining to the history, materials and artist or designer. Allowing those who wish to know more about the items on display to dive deep and work their way through the history of the craft from middle ages body armor to haute couture McQueen.
Creativity: A graphic language, designed by The Invisible Party and inspired by the molecular change that occurs in leather during the process of cuir bouilli, features throughout the exhibition - linking the overarching craft, design and fashion category information and adding a sense of playfulness and whimsy. The use of a modern light purple palette, contrasting with rich, dark tones, creates a visually striking environment that captures the enchanting and magical nature of cuir bouilli. The incorporation of disco balls and glossy elements adds a playful and whimsical touch to the exhibition space, enhancing the overall creative atmosphere.
Sustainability: Breathing new life into existing gallery assets multiple plinths and display cabinets have been repurposed throughout the exhibition and in the spirit of reuse, repurpose, recycle all additional display platforms fabricated by The Invisible Party will be kept by Schoenenkwartier and continue to be utilised in future exhibitions for years to come.
