In this version of the classic play the family is deaf and the acting is done in sign language. It is set in Spain in the 1930´s when the fascism was increasing over Europe and being deaf was not safe anymore. The mother is hiding her daughters away from both the patriarchy and the hearing world.
In my set the home is like a bunker. A sand colored room. To get protection in, or suffocate. The keywords are light and shadow, the Church and influences from the Arabic architecture.
The ceiling is pressing down. In the center hang a big sacral chandelier, made in metal net with four leaf clover pattern, decorated with wooden crosses. This crone create big shadows in the room of both four leaf cloves and crosses depending on where the light came from. Catching the actors they look like behind a fence. The hearing housekeeper controls the crone/light going up or down.
On the back wall hang simple black chairs. Like being overwatched in an abstract way. When hit by light from the side the shadows of the chairs shoot away like missiles. Those chairs are also taken down and used.
Through square portholes/witnessholes on two walls the family can keep track of the life outside. Those holes are also covered with the metal net and paints the room with more clover shadows, or the actors, getting caught in the light from the outside.
Lights could only get into the room through those square holes, or from the ceiling just striking the walls, or by the exit corridor at the very back.
