The Commons Saladaeng is a F&B complex nestled in vibrant Bangkok neighborhood called “Saladaeng”, meaning a red pavilion. The name came from the presence of a small red-gabled train station situated nearby 100 years ago. Eight small gables, reminiscent in scale of those in the past, are made possible to accommodate the present-day needs for wider interior spaces with the use of a special M-shape roof structure. Red rubber, clear and red transparent corrugated sheets add a layer of visual complexity onto a simple architectural form. The building facade forms a concave curve receding away from the large Ficus tree in the front minimizing disturbance to its branches and emphasizes the tree itself as the main focal point. The tree provides shading for the cascading ground, screens out the visually incongruous context across the street while simultaneously adds a level of privacy and intimacy to the space within. The building middle volume was carved out as large open-air communal dining space, oriented towards the tree. It fuses large steps with platforms, seating and planting. A special pallet unit system is strategically added as an architectural device that transforms the cascading steps into different configurations suitable for various kinds of activities. The Commons is an innovative urban lifestyle architecture, well rooted in its historical and climatic context with a sense of place, and always adapting itself to answer to the changing life of the community.
