As one of the first countries in the world to produce textiles, China has a profound cultural heritage in textile technology and history. This project is located in Deqing county, Hangzhou. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, there was an office which providing textiles for the imperial palace in Hangzhou. Meanwhile, Deqing county is located along the Beijing-Hangzhou grand canal and occupies a favorable geographical position for the development of textile industry. Deqing has several hundred years of textile history and is also an important silk weaving industry region in China. Before renovation, this place used to be a textile factory with a long history.Seeing the ups and downs of the textile industry in Hangzhou, this mill started to decline and hard to keep up with the speed of nowadays development.Under the background of urban renewal, the government wants to preserve some historical buildings and their cultural features as a kind of cultural memory. At the same time, they hope to endue it with new and diversified functions: cultural exhibition, library, cafe, etc., So as the Community Cultural center, it will continue to be preserved and activate the city. The factory was in poor condition.Under the premise of respecting history, the original cultural style is retained with modern design techniques to create a Cultural Exhibition Hall. First, Although the building was old, its structure was with special beauty. So we decided to maintain the origianal structure.Second,we did a full study on the history and geographical features of the textile industry in Hangzhou. We got the inspiration from textile machine and yarn. Then we applied these elements into our design, to recall people’s memory.
