When asked to design an alternative space in Gaienmae, Tokyo, the client's only request was for the space to function as a café and bar. Designing a space that guides the use of a space that is not known how it will be used in the future creates a sense of constraint and leads to unintended and unreasonable use of the space. A discrepancy would arise between the space and the user.

Therefore, instead of preparing for future users, we sought a functionally monotonous way of being as much as possible. I decided to trust that a good user would emerge and master the space. As the designer, my design policy was to create a space that would retain a "good quality atmosphere" even after it left my hands. This seemed to me to be the ideal direction for this project.

In terms of "good quality," we sought a new concept of "luxury" that was wild and spontaneous, away from the conventional scale of expensive. We considered how to create a rich space through the use and presentation of materials in a simple manner. We consciously used materials close to where we live, and incorporated ordinary scenery found in the city, such as rain gutters, exterior wall materials, and temporary enclosures at construction sites, into the space. These are ordinary materials, but by changing the way of looking at them, and through their formations, a space unlike any other is created. I hope that experiencing this will be a value-altering experience for the viewer.
