SUMMARY: Conversion of the historical place of reservoirs into the Temple of Stone within a long time area transformation of the National Cultural Monument – Špilberk Castle into a cultural centre in the Brno city offers first publicly accessible water tanks. DESCRIPTION: At the beginning of the 20th century the water tanks served as water reservoirs for Brno, but they were not in use since the end of the 1970´s and deteriorated. Within the transformation of the castle into a cultural centre it was decided about a new functional utilization of this area – setting up the Temple of Stone. The basic concept of a restoration of the Špilberk Castle was created in a close cooperation with the state monument care. The concept included a complex approach to all aspects of building interventions with emphasis on rehabilitation of the character preserved until the middle of the 20th century, when the last significant stage of restoration of the whole area including the reservoirs took place. An entire part of the recent changes was to protect defined and generally accepted cultural values with utilization of historical building techniques and crafts. The exposition situated in the reconstructed space was named „Temple of Stone“ after the architect has first visited the place during the structural research. The main space of the future exposition painted a picture an ancienit megalithic shrines by its´own architecture. There is a valuable collection of a stone-sculpture artefacts – ancient statues, headstones, tombstones from defuncted cemeteries and stones ornaments from defuncted Brno´s buildings. The museum has not been able to present these artefacts due to inadequate space up to now. The majority of artefacts were hidden from the public in depositories. The aim of the renovation for the purpose of the exhibition was gaininig coherent exposition space by connecting the formerly separated spaces of the water tanks. As part of the renovation the aim to access the existing objects was the architect's intention together with the premises that they themselves become an exhibit and architectural and artistic foundation that form an engaging scene. There were builded new passages between each of water tanks during reconstruction. Main entrance into the reservoires from outside creates a newly builded entrance, which is a puncturing into the reservoir´s rampart and walls. The entrance is situated from an outer space in front of the reservoirs, which continues in next reconstructed spaces within the scope transformation of the Špilberk Castle. Part of the reconstruction of the water tanks was besides the anteroom of the entrance also the terrace above the water tanks and adjacent Castle walls.
