In the past few years, a new buzzword “bakugai” has become popular in Japan. Bakugai means “explosive buying” by foreign visitors from Asian countries. Takashimaya Duty-Free Shop SHILLA & ANA was opened in Shinjuku, Tokyo in accordance with this marketing trend in partnering with the Japanese luxury department store Takashimaya, ANA Trading, and South Korean hotel operator Hotel SHILLA. The store contains over 30 luxury brands including cosmetics, watches, and fountain pens. The design challenge was to control each tenant’s store design and bring harmony to make an integrated space design. We came up with an idea using 15 tons of stainless steel and alpolic (aluminum and metal composite material) shaped as ribbons that would connect each tenant store and common spaces as if wrapping a gift box.
