Tak is Swedish for Roof. The rooftop restaurant is part of a large overhaul of a downtown block in Stockholm’s central business district. The view toward the Royal Palace and Town Hall were some of the features that the restaurant wanted to take advantage of. Our task was to create the interior for the Chef Frida Ronge’s Japanese restaurant.
The building is a rather inward-looking former 1970s office building. But the location on the new two top floors covered in glass, endowed the space with opportunities to do much more. The restaurant’s inside is a mix between Scandinavian and Japanese traditions. The building’s original character also flavoured the interior. The Structuralist fascination with systems and flexibility is not far removed, discernible in the track in the ceiling and the polished concrete floors.
One flight up from the subdued elegance of the restaurant, we are met by a more straightforward, plainspoken bar. Here the atmosphere is dominated by the buzz of people. The south-facing roof terrace is the focal point—a well-appointed home for the commanding views over Stockholm.
The restaurant features a series of new tables we developed to suit Jasper Morrison’s Lightwood chair. We also designed screens, ceilings, pleated booth collars, banquettes and bars, employing metal, wood and concrete.
