Conceived by the inspiring collaboration with acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and renowned lighting designer Tino Kwan, Ta-ke is a sophisticated Japanese restaurant for high-end clientele located in the vibrant city of Hong Kong.
Following client’s request to explore new ideas for the creation of a traditional Japanese restaurant, time and its intimate bond with nature were chosen as the main themes for the interior of Ta-ke: the design team aimed at connecting diners and nature within the constructed environment, bringing the idea of the outdoor space into the building.
In order to tactfully integrate the outdoor with the interior space and connect guests with natural elements, the designers took inspiration from the courtyards of Japan in the 17th century, reimagining the traditional structure in a contemporary approach with a sophisticated use of various natural elements, such as bamboo, wood and adobe.
Ta-ke consists of five distinct zones, each of which corresponds to a particular part of a traditional Japanese courtyard; various forms of bamboo are used to distinguish the zones through the guest’s journey. Together with customised lighting design that emits a soft glow, the natural quality of the bamboo creates a mesmerising rhythmic visual effect, enhancing the ambience of the space.
