Creativity:
Sway’s Aspen location transforms the traditional dining experience by combining the essence of Thai culinary traditions with the rugged beauty and intimate warmth of the Rocky Mountains. The design draws inspiration from the all-teak interiors of traditional Thai homes and the high-mountain hospitality spaces of Nepal, merging these influences to create a space that feels both worldly and deeply connected to its surroundings. The concept of "inventive alchemy," shared by Thai cuisine and Aspen culture, informs every detail—from wire-brushed woods that expose natural textures to patinated brass ceiling panels that will evolve over time. Hand-sculpted cotton paper banana leaf pendants, created in collaboration with Pelle, add an artistic and tactile layer to the design, while Thai mulberry paper and brass "boat" pendants by LaSpec infuse the space with a bespoke, luminous quality. Together, these elements create a space that is layered and intimate.

Innovation:
Sway manipulates simple, everyday materials into extraordinary forms. The raw cane-paneled ceiling, accented by custom wood beams, demonstrates a creative use of texture to define the space. The interplay between wire-brushed woods, raked clay plaster, and blackened steel introduces a tactile richness that captures the rugged elegance of Aspen while paying homage to Thai craft traditions. The Calacatta Viola White marble bar top, juxtaposed with a burgundy glazed lava-stone tile base, introduces unexpected color and material pairings that elevate the dining experience. These thoughtful, innovative design choices allow Sway to balance luxury with raw, unpretentious honesty.

Functionality:
The layout creates informal rooms that provide a sense of intimacy while maintaining the energy and buzz of a communal, family-style meal. Mahogany banquettes, customized leather chairs, and plush upholstery ensure comfort, inviting guests to linger in cozy, welcoming surroundings. The bar area, with its striking marble and tile design, serves as a vibrant focal point for social interaction, while the soft acoustics and gentle lighting foster a relaxing atmosphere. The flexible design adapts to the rhythm of Aspen life, offering a retreat after a day on the slopes and an ideal setting for both lively gatherings and intimate meals.

Sustainability:
The restaurant’s design emphasizes natural materials that celebrate longevity and character, and reflects a commitment to sustainability. Wire-brushed woods and patinated brass are durable materials, aging gracefully to enhance their intrinsic beauty over time. Local craftsmanship is central to the project, with Black Hound Design and SMFG producing banquettes, casework, and tabletops that embody artisanal quality while reducing the environmental impact associated with transporting materials.
