For the island city-state of Singapore, survival entails the prudent management of scarce natural resources and sensible handling of environmental challenges. Decisive planning has led to often-drastic environmental engineering policies such as the construction of the 350-meter dam (the Marina Barrage) that converted the Singapore River, Marina Bay and Kallang Basin into a freshwater reservoir to bolster the island nation’s water supply. The Sustainable Singapore Gallery, housed within Marina Barrage, narrates the story of Singapore’s environmental transformation while concurrently educating visitors on present and future environmental threats in order to promote a more sustainable lifestyle. Besides its primary audience of students and the general public, the gallery expects to host VIPs. As a result, a screening room and a meeting room were incorporated, placed along the northern end of the gallery to capitalize on scenic views of the surrounding waters. Arriving at the foyer, visitors progress through a series of expanding chambers. The main exhibition space comprises a large single-volume gallery with an open arrangement, loosely segmented into various thematic zones. Space, text, interactive multimedia, graphics and models combine to create an engaging multi-sensory experience that brings the gallery’s message to life.
