Brinkworth’s latest project with Supreme, the brand’s largest store to date, has opened recently in LA. The shop is located in the old iconic Tower Records site in West Hollywood, a paragon of music history in LA. The new LA flagship is the latest design collaboration between Brinkworth, The Wilson Brothers, architect Neil Logan, and Supreme, a creative relationship which has spanned over a decade.
Respecting the site’s history has been paramount, Tower Records’ original wraparound billboard fascia has been sensitively renovated and the storefront has been opened up to allow more sightlines into the space from the street and carpark. Much of the original shell has been retained, while skylights have been added to let natural light flood into the space.
Celebrating skate culture, the store features a huge cloverleaf bowl that is entirely suspended, floating above the floor. The skate bowl’s remarkable scale meant that the building’s central roof section had to be raised to account for its height. The monumental structure, which has been designed with and handcrafted by Steve Badgett’s SIMPARCH, had to be aseismic and features three different depths. As much love has been poured into the bowl’s exterior as on the interior. Sandstone benches take inspiration from iconic skatespot, the Santa Monica Sand Gaps.
A full-scale F1 car in bright hues by Mark Gonzales sits in the middle of the store, while works by Nate Lowman, Fuck This Life and Josh Smith can be found around the store. The shop’s speakers have been created by Devon Turnbull, aka Ojas.
Adam Brinkworth says, “It was such an honour to take loving care of the historic Tower Records structure while literally raising the roof to accommodate the huge levitating skate bowl. The site has gone from the world’s largest record store to the world’s largest Supreme.”
Ben Wilson adds, “Once again it has been a great experience collaborating with Brinkworth and the Supreme team to help make another epic space. It’s a real privilege to be part of the brand’s evolution and continue helping them on their retail journey as the brand expands and evolves.”
