In what was originally a 19th Century bank in Edinburgh's Georgian-era New Town, Scottish studio Ja!Coco! deliver a South American-inspired bar & lounge for 200 patrons. The location adapts from a low-key daytime lounge to a vibrant nocturnal hang-out in keeping with the lifestyle of the Chilean client. A bold yet sympathetic restoration was key to the preservation of the location's character. The design references Chilean symbolism and geography with a palette of earthy pink tones and lively ochres. The bar serves as a literal expression of a South American landscape, be it sunrise or sunset. The heart of this project pays tribute to Pachamama - a fertility goddess who presides over planting and harvesting, embodies the mountains, and revered by the Incas. The interior's solar-worshipping palette balances symmetrically down the elongated arched walls parallel to the moon, thus giving further credence to the rituals and beliefs of the indigenous peoples of the Andes. Gazing into the venue from the street, one is eclipsed by a colossal and texturous moon. The seemingly lightweight sphere is made by authentic Japanese paper techniques, designed by Davide Groppi, Milan. Yet the grand object is rock hard and required the removal of the bar-front window for installation. The site's six-metre high ceiling merited careful consideration as to the suspension height of the moon. Additional LED strip lights were positioned as ceiling flushes to exaggerate its presence. Undeniably, the 2-metre supermoon is an awe-inspiring spectacle for patrons as they arrive and its illumination also engulfs the dance floor in its entirety. Key material attributes include the bar-top made from concrete resin and recycled building lumber (by Foresso), encaustic clay tiles from the Turner Prize-winning Granby Workshop, Kvadrat fabrics, bespoke steel-works powder-coated in deep purple and custom utile tabletops from local Leith carpenters.
