As a hub of Sichuan-style art, Chengdu has witnessed a group of outstanding artists such as He Duoling, Zhou Chunya, and Zhang Xiaogang emerge at the end of the last century. Yulin Road, a gathering place for contemporary artists, has bred avant-garde artistic and fashionable lifestyles. As a part of the local cultural cluster, the Suiyue Art Gallery finds its new location in an old office building in the 1980s on Fangcao West Street. The designers created a brand new art space reduced to 400 square meters from the original 1,500-square-meter gallery.

Innovation: A blending of old and new, deconstruction and reorganization
Considering the unfavorable conditions of too many columns and too long passages on the site, the designers proposed the concept of "bamboo" emerging from the ground to make the new space grow from the old building through a minimalist approach.

Creativity: Intervening and extending, inclusive and diversified
The theme of "bamboo stem" went through the entire space, rhythmically distributed in the details in the passage and lighting. By exploring the infinite possibilities of the art space, the designers arranged the layout through interspersion and connection to dissolve the original columns. As a medium connecting the environment and nature, the openings in the wall extend the internal space infinitely, introducing sunshine of the four seasons and birdsong into the interior.

Functionality:
Through space transformation, the original 1,500-square-meter gross floor area is reduced to 400 sqm, in which 1F, 2F and 3F respectively function as a display window art gallery, a stepped art gallery and an installation art gallery. The well-considered planning realizes the versatility and flexibility of single spaces, endowing the space with more possibilities and vitality.

The wires and pipes hide above the ceiling, where the ceiling track is combined with the lighting skillfully, leaving more possibilities for the exhibition, making traditional Chinese art complement contemporary art creations.

Sustainability:
1. Restrained, minimum transformation to retain most old structures
The site is located in an old office building constructed in the 1980s. The design team retained most of the historical structures and traces of the building, while transforming the facade with minimum intervention to define the first impression of the art gallery. This not only enhances the utilization rate of the exiting old architecture, but also brings more possibilities to the space.

2. A paradigm of simplified, efficient and economical use of the venue
Conventional art galleries often seek a large scale and high budget, causing a sense of alienation. In contrast, erecting at the street corner with a sense of affinity, SUIYUE Art brings art to urban life in an economical and efficient way. Closely connecting with the community, citizens and urban culture, it brings a exploratory perspective to the diversity of art culture.
