The Studio Apartment Altschwabing by Arnold/Werner is a project that aims to transform a former artist atelier into a high-end apartment. The renovation takes place in the penthouse of a listed art nouveau building located in Munich, erected in 1906 according to the design of the Hungarian architect Franz Popp (1870-1928). The core intervention leans towards an open concept, shifting its focus on a new floor plan that allows light-flooded rooms thanks to striking studio windows.
Given the proximity to the Englischer Garten, the property offers a pleasant view enjoyable from the romantic loggia. Quite challenging was to redesign the plan of the apartment. The new layout was achieved by raising the upper part of the studio and by removing walls and structural beams, while also extending the former dry store. In this way, the living areas make the most out of the former artist studio, ensuring a comfortable fruition of the space.
The main feature revolves around the possibility to conceive bright rooms through the simple usage of natural light. The living room and the dining room are merged together, in order to create a spacious and airy environment. On the other hand, the sleeping area of the house presents a rather intimate atmosphere. Here the bedroom, with an ensuite bathroom, is cozy and welcoming. Throughout the whole design, it is to be found the use of durable and high-quality materials, such as natural stone and room-defining joinery.
Thus, it was possible to create an individual interior design that emphasizes the upscale quality furnishing. Dark quartzite and travertine stone have been implemented in the final outlook, as well as top tier textiles, to achieve specific sustainability standards. Moreover, the fresh and adaptable project allows for flexibility and potential conversion. Ultimately, the result is a protecting alcove in which history and innovative contemporary design coexist. A recharging place filled with beauty and comfort, meant to be passed on to future generations in a timeless existence.
