The airy, aesthetically pure flagship Kinnasand showroom in Milan, designed by acclaimed architect Toyo Ito, was hosting an inspirational collaboration between Berlin-based Studio Greiling and Kinnasand Lab. STRUCTURES offered a thought-provoking colour exploration into the experience of rugs and furniture.

Comprising a series of benches, ottomans and daybeds made from colourful powder-coated steel tubes, STRUCTURES is a dialog between the flat and the elevated surface. Architectural steel tube elements are lifting the rug from the floor, reconfiguring the flat surface into furniture.

STRUCTURES featured the rugs Kelim, Zenit, and Harvest out of the Kinnasand collection. Each rug is crafted by hand using the traditional rug making techniques Persian Knot, Tibetan Knot and Kelim flatweave.

The space is divided into rhythmic areas with Longarm Very Long, a structure holding up Kinnasand’s curtain fabrics. The arrangement, inspired by Japanese entrance doors uses these fabrics to hide parts of the showroom, yet translucent through the delicate quality and patterns. In stark contrast to the lightweight textiles, with stones as solid counter weight.

Katrin Greiling: ‘Creating this limited series of furniture for the Kinnasand Lab project, I aimed to bring the textures and richness of the rugs closer to the hands and body, enabling visitors to the Kinnasand stand to experience the character of each individual rug.
