This project will span 20 years of design investigation. When WorkLife Center was originally imagined in 2006, the design team aimed to unify four showrooms under the global furniture company’s brand. The result was a space that celebrated the diversity in each company while allowing the emergence of a holistic appearance. The design created a shared DNA that linked all companies together. The original project and the new project are both anchored by a sculptural element. In phase one, we created a highly-parametric, digitally fabricated structure called “The Body”. The new addition is inspired by the WorkCafe and is anchored by a sculpture that was digitally designed but made entirely by hand, affectionately called “Woody”. To highlight the company’s desire to reflect on the evolution of workplace, the design team created two complementing spaces with juxtaposing materiality, striking a balance between modern and rustic. WorkLife’s palette and geometries speak to DNA of technology and in many ways feels futuristic. The WorkCafe showcases the quality of each material, which imparts a handmade feel. Weaving of modern and natural elements creates a perfect fusion of past and present and affirms the client’s belief that thoughtfully designed spaces can make our lives better.
