A decade of regeneration at a small steel factory in rural North Germany has resulted in a beautiful juxtaposition of rare survivals of Germany’s industrial past and crisp, contemporary architecture. In 2006 Stahlwerk Augustfehn began working with Finkernagel Ross to modernise their 19th century factory. While creating new production facilities at the site, Finkernagel Ross has captured the unique heritage of the steel works by restoring and displaying industrial artefacts in the new and repurposed buildings. These unearthed artefacts of a bygone era include a painstakingly restored former factory clock, a listed steam engine dating from 1902 and several old original steel hammers. Neue Hammerhalle is the main production plant and forge on site - a 2100-sqm facility, replacing the dilapidating building that housed the forging hammer that lends the building its name. Having completed Neue Hammerhalle in 2009, work began on Stahlwerk Anbau. This involved extending the existing administration wing to house a restored, listed nineteenth-century steam engine. A third project, completed in December 2017- Stahlwerk Aufstockung - creates additional office and meeting spaces at the site. Works included a roof conversion and extension to the original mid-20th century administration building. The traditional pitched roof is “peeled” away to reveal new, transparent offices, incorporating a restored former factory clock within the new glazed façade.
