Located next to Ulsan’s Grand Park, SSAP Coffee offers pastries and coffee. To the client’s intention to make the new project “vintage and hip (contemporary, trendsetting)”, the design team proposed their own interpretation of the space, where the heritage of the existing spatial elements can be left embedded within the new project. In the process of demolishing the existing space, most of all structural elements, including rough concrete walls, worn-out floor tiles, cold metal frames and glass windows, are intentionally left untouched. Through this, not only the project speaks of sustainable spatial design, but also newly introduced furniture and fixtures are dramatically highlighted. The project focuses on spacious spatial layout with minimal form of fixtures and furniture. By using no artificial decorations, the design team emphasizes natural juxtaposition of materials themselves. The smooth flow between warm wood and cold metal creates visual harmony and comfort, while contrasting materials generate a contemporary and trendy atmosphere. The space is also carefully curated with red focal colored cabinets, chairs, showcases and electrical raceways, in order to form an organic relationship with the whole space design. Through the design of the space, SSAP coffee targets the MZ generation that pursues an unusual experience, while accommodating the locals of the neighborhood with familiarity and comfort. The exterior facade is designed to be harmonized with the existing red brick facade of the building, while, by neatly organized form, a horizontally stretched space can expand its atmosphere to the facade. And, the facade uses wood and metal for the materials that embody the passage of the time within themselves. The main door and ventilation door are finished in zinc steel plate while folding panels for the windows are finished in birch plywood, which naturally creates harmony with the space inside. The design team wishes to create a space that links exterior and interior in terms of form, texture, color and atmosphere, believing that would result in a solid presence of SSAP Coffee. The space is furnished with design products of Furniture Tt(Thanks to), which are inspired by the assembly methods. Whereas maintaining joinery methods of wooden furniture, by altering to different textured surfaces, the rough texture and crisp lines of aluminums are maximized.
