Sparks Meeting offers several meeting and gathering spaces for people and organisations, with its interior architecture and custom made furniture signed by Brussels design duo Cobra Studios. Located in the art deco Shell building in the heart of Brussels, the 2500-sq-m space draws aesthetic inspiration from the building’s original elements like travertine, marble, and concrete, and combined these with new materials like latex, acrylic, velvet and aluminium. Cobra Studios designed the chairs, tables, lamps, sofas and curtains to fit the function and aesthetic of each individual work space, meeting areas and even restrooms.
As a young company, the founders of Sparks were eager to give the designers carte blanche to develop a new type of meeting spaces, with a different interpretation of common objects such as sofas, chairs, tables, whiteboards, coat racks... all within a limited start-up budget. In addition, the layout of the rooms as well as the furniture, had to be flexible and durable. This required inventiveness with the type of materials and how to use them. For example, as wall coverings a recycled car vinyl wrap was used to turn a wall into a giant writing board, chromed pipes that come from brooms create a prestigious looking conference room, signage was made from material from car tuning, arches and handrails were made from soft polished recycled acrylic... All these elements create a playful and futuristic approach to the existing decorative art movement.
The client's wish for flexibility was translated into every aspect of the room. The tables, when not needed, have removable table tops, and together with the foldable legs they fit perfectly in the built-in cupboard storage provided in each room. The whiteboards have curved top sections to match the stainless steel grid structure from which they can be hung. The space can be completely empty and still people can take a seat in the niches in the walls. Colourfully coated foam columns reminiscent of Greek ruins can serve as stools, side tables or a speaker's podium.
Cobra Studios was not afraid to combine the more dated 80's vibe with unusual and contrasting colours and materials. Metals go hand in hand with marble and travertine, shine contrasts with softness, the rather theatrical and museum experience with a cozy and warm atmosphere.
