“Live Like the Future’s on Fire” is an analog representation of a digital sound wave. This art installation, created for the Facebook HQ in Seattle, is an answer to the client’s call for a positive affirmation. The bright color pop in the lobby juxtaposes the clean design of architect Frank Gehry. Art and design studio, Electric Coffin, used this platform to reimagine the concept of positive affirmation in a way that used unique materials, recontextualized for the space. The design was initially created by recording the phrase “Live like the future is on fire” and translating the decibel levels into shape, color and form. Using that sound wave shape as the framework, the artists then created spires of cultural detritus: found objects from local Seattle thrift stores. Each object was then composed into smaller sub-narratives that were then dipped in primer and painted in an ombre of bright color. Each component came into the studio with a past life and after being recontextualized became part of a greater narrative. Finally, the entire piece was covered in an ombre of multi-color flocking. The vivid tones electrified the spires and brought the piece to life. Flocking, being a tactile material, encouraged passersby to literally feel the positive affirmation, melding the visual, tangible, and auditory worlds.
