The Coral Triangle Center (CTC) is a foundation focusing on protection and conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems. Currently CTC is developing a visitor center in Sanur, Bali. Our briefing was to attract, entertain and educate a specific target group: millennials. As a result we created ‘SOS from the deep’ - the world’s first NGO exploited educational escape room. The experience is located in a dedicated space of 5x12m on the visitor center premises. Visitors per team of 6 are voluntarily being locked up, in order to release themselves within 1 hour by solving a series of thematic puzzles. They will have to be collaborative, resourceful and curious in order to solve the puzzles and escape the total of 4 rooms which form the experience. The experience starts in with a video introduction, narrated by a marine biologist who explains about the beauty and importance of coral reefs. He also warns the visitors about the threats they face, and the fact that most of the coral reefs will be dead by 2050 if humanity will not act to stop this. Then the clock starts ticking and the visitors are being locked up in the first room. Chronologically contestants end up in 4 thematic rooms: - Shark cage: introduction to the coral reef - Coral laboratory: insights and importance of marine ecosystems - Submarine: encounter the threats to coral reefs such as plastic pollution and overfishing - Coral reef: learn how to help and protect the coral reefs for the future
