Soluna is a key destination within the Walker Street Precinct in North Sydney, a hospitality-led urban intervention beneath Aqualand’s AURA residential development. One of four new venues transforming the precinct, Soluna is an immersive hospitality experience that innovatively bridges the relaxed ambience of a coastal lifestyle with the density and rhythm of a metropolitan context.

The design concept draws from the notion of tropical brutalism, a deliberate juxtaposition of soft and hard, lush and minimal. It fuses the laid-back, sun-drenched sensibility of Los Angeles with the architectural rigour of Sydney’s evolving urban language. The space is anchored by a sculptural, monolithic green masonry bar that carves through the interior. This central feature is both a high-performance hospitality workhorse and a bold visual gesture, expressing functionality through form.

Soluna’s spatial layout is highly adaptable. A series of sheer curtains allow for fluid reconfiguration, enabling the creation of intimate pockets or larger group arrangements as needed. This functional flexibility speaks to the evolving nature of modern dining, where diversity of experience is key. From solo diners to large social gatherings, Soluna accommodates with grace and ease.

Creativity is evident in every detail, from the eclectic lighting and furniture pieces to the vibrant art and exotic marble tabletops that punctuate the raw concrete and verdant palette. These moments inject personality and playfulness, enhancing the sensory richness of the space. Rather than adhere to a singular stylistic formula, Soluna thrives on contrasts, between colour and material, softness and structure, nature and industry.

Innovation in design is paired with a strong eco-social conscience. Material selections prioritise durability and ethical sourcing. Natural stone, recycled content, and low-VOC finishes contribute to a low-impact footprint, while the integration of greenery improves indoor air quality and fosters a biophilic connection. Socially, Soluna activates an urban pocket, drawing community into a shared, open precinct that supports local business and cultural vibrancy. It functions as a civic connector, offering both respite and stimulation in the heart of North Sydney.

Soluna represents a new paradigm in hospitality design, where atmosphere, performance, and social impact are integrated seamlessly. It challenges conventional distinctions between indoor and outdoor, relaxed and refined, temporary and permanent. This fluidity is a hallmark of its success, allowing Soluna to exist as both a neighbourhood anchor and a destination venue.

Through its innovative design thinking, functional adaptability, creative expression, and considered material approach, it is a celebration of contrasts, bold yet soft, grounded yet free, that redefines what hospitality in an urban Australian context can be.
